Visual art needs to show color, shape, radiography, and composition, but all these elements need to be shown by light. Let say, light is the source of all expression.
Before talking about how to build retail lighting with LED lighting, first of all, we should understand how important the lighting to your business.
The purpose of retail lighting can be divided into two aspects: one is for customers, the other is for commodity:
- For customers, good retail lighting can attract customers’ attention and enhance customers’ buying desire.
- For commodity, ingenious retail lighting can enhance the color and texture of the commodity, make it become more attractive, and create a good brand image.
To conclude, the right retail lighting is not only simply illuminating your retail space, and it also sets the atmosphere, guides customers to specific areas, and provides an overall backdrop for your customer experience.
Achieving the perfect retail lighting, it is not difficult once you understand the principles behind designing a retail lighting plan.
1. Types of retail lighting
Retail lighting can be divided into three main types: general lighting, accent lighting and decorative lighting. Retail stores usually use some combination of these four different lighting technologies to illuminate the space.
General lighting is the main lighting in the sore, and it is usually used in gaps between the lighting between highlighted displays, corners and shelves. The purpose of general lighting in store is to make customers feel comfortable and provide enough light.
Accent lighting is used to highlight specific areas, commodities, displays and decorations in the store. The purchase of the accent lighting is to make the products brighten enough and attractive to customers.
Decorative lighting adds decorative elements to the store. Aesthetic luminaries are used, such as chandeliers, to define your store brand.
2.Options of Lighting Fixtures
Above three lighting effects can be achieved by using different LED lighting fixtures, so now we come to how to choose the right lighting fixtures. Retail lighting can be installed in a wide variety of recessed, surface-mounted and suspended fixtures, which will depend on your store design style. Most importantly, we need to pay attention to below factors before choosing the right LED lighting fixtures:
– Illuminance (LUX)
Illuminance refers to the luminous flux of 1 square meter orthogonal to the light, in LUX.
As for the intuitive feeling of illuminance, it is the “brightness” reflected by the luminous surface. If you need a brighter light in certain space, you need a lighting fixtures with higher illuminance.
– Correlated Color Temperature (CCT)
The correlated color temperature (CCT) is a measure the color appurtenance of the lights in Kelvin (K) degree. For retail lighting, retailers usually use cooler colors for cold-tone products, while use warmer colors for warm-tone products. You can mix various color temperature throughout your store, but small stores tend to stick with one general color tone.
– Colour Rendering Index (CRI)
The Colour Rendering Index (CRI or also denoted as Ra) is a measure of light’s ability to properly render colour (ranges from 0 to 100 – the highest possible score). Colour rendering is particularly important for commercial applications in order to reveal true and vivid colours of the commodities.
Stores of high-grade brands generally use lighting fixtures with relatively low illuminance (300LUX), warm tone (2500-3000K) and good color rendering (Ra > 90). Meanwhile, use some spotlights to highlight special commodities in specific areas to attract customers.
